ILA Healthcare Leadership Conference
The 2021, inaugural ILA Healthcare Leadership Conference occurred virtually, live online 17-18 May 2021. The conference theme is Strengthening Ties Between Healthcare and Leadership. The conference will bring together both healthcare and leadership experts covering foundational and cutting-edge topics that are relevant for healthcare professionals (practitioners, educators, and scholars) to optimize leader development, leadership education, research, practice, and networking. Each day of the conference will begin with a keynote address followed by panel discussions and interactive poster sessions. Scroll down for details and speakers.
Panel discussions will be highly interactive and engaging. Conversation leaders (panelists) will each speak for about five-minutes, framing the discussion, and will then facilitate a rich dialogue in which participants consider the important issues being raised and share and learn from one another.
Leadership knowledge and application, expertise, and collaboration are essential for being an effective healthcare professional. Panels (breakout sessions) will therefore be organized along the following themes:

The ILA’s Healthcare Leadership Conference is ideal for established and emerging healthcare professions, which includes ILA members, non-members, students, patients, practitioners, educators, and those with a passion for improving healthcare systems. As a participant, you will become better equipped to improve yourself and the systems and organizations in which you work by utilizing a leadership lens relevant to healthcare.

Call for Poster Abstracts
Deadline: 1 April 2021

An interactive display poster is a one-page, visual representation (using text, graphics, photographs, data samples, etc.) of a paper, a research project, a developing idea, or an innovative program that is uploaded and presented by the creator(s) during a hosted poster session.* Posters are an excellent format for receiving feedback from colleagues with common interests. Posters are encouraged from both emerging and established scholars, as well as from practitioners who are implementing innovative programs.
Proposals for a poster must include a title, identified theme (see below), and abstract (500 words max). Be sure your proposal addresses one of the following themes:
- Personal Development: Inspiring new thinking and personal growth
- Team Development: The synergy that occurs when working together
- Leadership Education and Development: Current practices and equipping future leaders
- Organizational Leadership in Healthcare: Setting climate and goals while motivating individuals
Poster abstracts are due April 1, 2021 with acceptance notification by April 20, 2021.

Keynote Speakers
Leadership: A Matter of Healthy Balance
Those in healthcare professions serve on the frontlines of developing and ensuring viable and sustainable communities; they work at the forefront of society’s quest to protect and improve lives; they are seekers of solutions to the most challenging medical problems; and they are committed to providing the best care, to discovering truth and to treating all with dignity and respect. Their leadership is critical. During the crisis and global trauma of COVID, we have been reminded of our interdependence and the need for developing more competent, courageous and ethical leaders. This keynote from Katherine Tyler Scott will discuss the essential practices of healthy, balanced leadership in healthcare because it matters to all of us.
Katherine Tyler Scott is Principal of Ki ThoughtBridge, LLC, a company that is known for its integrated approach to the development of individual and organizational leadership that increases adaptive capacity, efficacy and resilience. Previously, Katherine developed and directed the Lilly Endowment Leadership Education Program and was President and CEO of Trustee Leadership Development, a National Leadership Development Center. Katherine has worked in public and private health facilities as a psychotherapist and supervisor of residents in psychiatry, psychology interns, and graduate social work students and has consulted with and provided training to executive leaders in various healthcare facilities. She has written extensively on integrated adaptive leadership, trusteeship, organizational development, and change management. Katherine is a current board member of Women4Change and she previously chaired the board of the International Leadership Association. She is a founding member of the Indianapolis chapter of the Coalition of 100 Black Women.
Innovative Leadership for Health Care
Maureen Metcalf’s keynote will focus on the principles and practices described in her 2021 book, Innovative Leadership for Health Care. This new book integrates the Innovative Leadership Framework with the Leader-Follower Framework to help dedicated health care professionals increase their leadership effectiveness.
Maureen Metcalf, Founder, and CEO of the Innovative Leadership Institute is an expert in anticipating and leveraging future business trends. She helps leaders elevate their leadership quality and transform their organizations to create sustainable impact and results. Her 30 years of experience informed her ten books used by public, private, and academic organizations to align company-wide strategy, systems, and culture with innovative leadership techniques. She is a regularly featured author for Forbes.com and host of a Voice America international radio show and podcast focusing on innovative leadership. Metcalf has been recognized for her contributions to the fields of leadership, innovation, and technology and was named Business First BizTech Executive of the Year 2019, ComSpark Power Player 2018, 2019, and 2020 and Ten Influential Business Leaders to Watch 2020. She is a Fellow of the International Leadership Association.

Conference Convenors
Erin S. Barry, M.S. is Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Military & Emergency Medicine at Uniformed Services University. She works with the Leader and Leadership Education and Development Program to develop leadership education and development programs that integrate research, curricula, and assessment within the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and Graduate Education Office. Ms. Barry’s educational background includes a M.S. (2008) in Biomedical Engineering from University of Texas at Arlington. In addition to her research and program development, Ms. Barry mentors and coaches graduate and medical students. She is currently working on her Ph.D. in Health Professions Education focusing on leadership and followership within medical education.
Tanisha L. Currie, BSN RN-BC, MA, MAJ, Army Nurse Corps, United States Army. MAJ Currie graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and worked as a clinical staff nurse and leader at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. In 2008, MAJ Currie accepted a direct commission into the Army Nurse Corps and was assigned to Joint Base Lewis McChord, WA. She has applied her leadership knowledge and experiences to several hospital organizations within clinical, academic, and combat operational settings. Presently, MAJ Currie is a PhD Nursing Candidate at the Uniformed Services University Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. Given MAJ Currie’s background and research interests she seeks to inspire organizations through principles of nutrition and cardiovascular health, leadership and psychological health, and performance.
Suzanna Fitzpatrick, DNP, CRNP, is an acute care and family practice nurse practitioner at University of Maryland Medical Center specializing in surgical patients where she has worked for the past 12 years. She has a passion for mentoring novice nurse practitioners in their transition into practice. She recently finished her doctorate in nursing practice with a focus on teamwork and collaboration in healthcare. She has written articles on teamwork, nursing leaderships, and transition shock for novice practitioners. Finally, she is an adjunct professor teaching Doctoral nursing students leadership at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. She resides in Burtonsville, Maryland with her family.
Neil E. Grunberg, Ph.D., is Professor of Military & Emergency Medicine, Medical & Clinical Psychology, and Neuroscience, School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University (USU) School of Medicine; Professor, USU Graduate School of Nursing; and Director of Research & Development, USU Leader and Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) program, Bethesda, Maryland. He earned Ph.D. degrees in Physiological and Social Psychology from Columbia University; and completed doctoral training in Pharmacology at Columbia University’s College of Physicians & Surgeons. He educates physicians, psychologists, and nurses for the Armed Forces and Public Health Service and has published more than 200 papers addressing behavioral medicine, drug use, stress, traumatic brain injury, and leadership. In 2015, Dr. Grunberg was selected to be a U.S. Presidential Leadership Scholar.
John E. McManigle, MD, FACP, Col (Ret) USAF, MC is Director of the Uniformed Services University School of Medicine Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) Curriculum. He is a retired Air Force Pulmonary and Critical Care physician who has served as faculty, course director, student affairs dean, vice dean and acting dean of the school of medicine. He uses his experience as an officer, physician and educator to ensure that the LEAD curriculum is relevant and impactful to the personal and professional development of the next generation of uniformed healthcare leaders.
